House 18-5

Pre-Construction Phase

The house is a 1-storey residence located at San Rafael, Bulacan. The site is within an industrial property, surrounded by a mix of mills and residential buildings. The courtyard-type residence provides privacy and isolation against this setting. All rooms open into the courtyard, while a concrete facade borders the spaces.

The house is raised from the ground and its textured concrete façade blankly faces an interior road finished in gravel. A planting strip along the façade allows vines and figs to cover the concrete and grow with the house. The courtyard divides the house into public and private zones, while the foyer and corridor bridges and connects the zones. This bridge-like accesses are designed with bay windows and seating that projects into the courtyard. Glass blocks are installed on selected walls to allow daylight and to obscure the view. Bedrooms are lined along the private zone, while the living, dining and kitchen are designed as an open plan public zone. A huge garden is located on both ends of the zones bordered by the fence. The service areas and garage, together with the garden, acts as buffer that separates the house from the adjacent mills and houses.

Its functionalist design and purists form reduced the design into the essential, devoid of decoration. The core of the design are its gardens enclosed by simple concrete forms.
