Intramuros Education Center for Heritage Conservation and Environment Preservation
MADE Architecture 2016 - Outstanding Entry
The deterioration of built heritage and natural landscape is affected by society’s indifference and negligence to both their culture and environment. With no amendment in our perception and priorities, by 2050, the state of architecture in regards to its context, history and landscape, will only worsen.
The education center functions not only as an institution for heritage conservation and environment preservation, but is also an architecture designed to evoke its purpose. The center will serve as an informal education facility that can be used as an extension of schools, libraries, theaters and museums.
The education center will be a prototype of a new building typology that are reincarnations of old structures, retrofitted and reinforced to adapt to future needs.
An adaptive reuse of a heritage structure that maximizes the resources used and lessens the impact of new construction to the environment, will be the ideal project of the future.
For 2050, we envision a Filipino architecture that is inherently our own, governed by principles of design from both our heritage and environment. It will be rooted from our collective memory as a nation.
